We began our day at 6:00am with a bus ride to our safari destination of Murchison Falls. Along the way, we were able to sight see and also stop for a delicious lunch at a small tourist location. Then we continued our bus ride to a beautiful waterfall on the Nile where we got out, enjoyed the view, and the spray from the waterfall which was very pleasant after the hot bus ride. We then continued to a ferry that took us across the Nile River to our hotel where we then had a wonderful spread for dinner, including chocolate cake for dessert, which we have been missing. Overall, we are all so happy to be at our lovely safari resort after a 12 hour

travel day.

Medical Camp in Mityana (delayed post due to WiFi issues)

Jan. 7, 2019:

We had our medical camp in Mityana.  It was an amazing day. It was so touching listening to the children, from Yvonne’s reading group, sing and welcome us and seeing how much work they have put into showing us their appreciation. We loved seeing all the children. They were so grateful and happy to see and interact with us. We had over 600 people that registered and we saw around 400 people. We saw people with many different diseases. We also gave out many Red Elephant packs, Blue Lion packs and glasses. One woman was carried in by her granddaughter to see us. She had had a stroke the year before and was in a lot of pain. It was very touching to see how her family had been taking care of her.  For many of these people this was their first time seeing a provider in many years, if ever. We were able to see the patients and dispense medications for them.  Many of their stories made us sad but we are so grateful that we had the opportunity to help, even if it was only for a short time.

Day 2

Today we got an early start with a wholesome breakfast. We then traveled to a rural area 1.5 hours away by bus outside of Jinga for a medical camp. We teamed with Grandmothers Without Borders and a local hospital to provide free medical care for over 275 people ranging in age from two years old to 95 years old. We treated all kinds of diseases including endemic tropical communicable diseases, as well as more commonly encountered illnesses like hypertension and diabetes. The people that came to obtain medical services had been waiting patiently for several hours before we even arrived. They were also very grateful for our services as they do not have access to regular medical care nor the funds required to obtain it. We had super helpful interpreters which allowed us to communicate with the people. We definitely could not have provided care without them. The five nurse practitioner students from Concordia University each helped at the pharmacy dispensing medications and also spent a lot of time diagnosing and treating patients along the four nurse practitioners of the group. There were also ten undergraduate students with varying backgrounds from Carroll University led by their public heath instructor which assisted in several other projects including distributing Red Elephant, Blue Lion packs, and water purification systems, as well as educating on how to use them. They also assisted in the pharmacy, testing people's vision and providing glasses, and distributing and reading books to the children. All of this was done in eight hours. This was a well celebrated event with the community gathering together, dressed in their finest attire where lunch was cooked and provided to embrace the opportunity to improve their health and well being. We are grateful for this amazing opportunity to have been able to make a difference in this community

We are excited and looking forward to moving on to another rural community tomorrow, where we will be providing similar services to another under-served population. Check out our Facebook page for more photos!
